To get the most out of this virtual text, you should use it in two ways. First, if you are uncertain about how to get started, organize your thoughts, or approach a paper, you can use the lessons to develop or improve your own writing process. Secondly, if you have questions about what we commonly refer to in writing studies as “second order concerns” — sentence-level issues with style, punctuation, grammar or other proofreading matters — this book can serve as a quick reference to answer them.

Each writer has his/her own preferences when drafting a document. Whether a person is writing a story, a poem, a journal entry, a letter, or a creative non-fiction piece, the writing approach is idiosyncratic, meaning that it is distinctive to the person who is writing.

Ruminations and Exercises. This collection of exercises, activities, and ruminations originates in a course I used to teach at Plymouth State University, an introductory multigenre creative writing course titled Writing and the Creative Process.

This open-access anthology celebrates the work of instructors we see as the vanguard of creative writing instruction. We have collected an arresting sample of classroom exercises by graduate students who not only teach across genres, but who themselves represent diverse regions and identities. We imagine this anthology as a generative grab bag. The exercises are grouped only by genre, and this schematic absence is intentional. Vanguard is an informal collection of strategies somewhat representative of those being used at this minute in classrooms across the United States.

Creative writing is any writing that goes outside the bounds of “normal, professional, journalistic, academic,
or technical forms of literature, typically identified by an emphasis on narrative craft, character development, and the use of literary tropes or with various traditions of poetry and poetics. Due to the looseness of the definition, it is possible for writing such as feature stories to be considered creative writing, even though they fall under journalism, because the content of features is specifically focused on narrative and character development. Both fictional and nonfictional works fall into this category, including such forms as novels, biographies, short stories, and poems.

Putting the Pieces Together: Reason and Writing for Success is a text that provides instruction in steps, builds writing, reading, and critical thinking, and combines comprehensive grammar review with an introduction to paragraph writing and composition; This text is designed as a companion resource to WRIT: Reason and Writing, which is Fanshawe College's introductory writing curriculum. Writing an analysis of a piece of writing can be a mystifying process. First, literary analyses (or papers that offer an interpretation of a story) rely on the assumption that stories must mean something. How does a story mean something? Isn't a story just an arrangement of characters and events? And if the author wanted to convey a meaning, wouldn't he or she be much better off writing an essay just telling us what he or she meant?
