Basic Database Searching

When searching for articles in databases, be aware different authors will use different terminology.  Create a list of search terms and synonyms. Example search terms:

• "2-year college" - "two-year college"
• "community college"
• cultural identity
• "culturally responsive education"
• "culturally responsive teaching"
• "culturally relevant teaching"
• "culturally relevant pedagogy"
• "educational equity"
• "education justice" - "educational justice"
• "first-generation college students"
• gender; "gender equality"; "gender fluid"
• "inclusive communication"
• intercultural; multicultural; cross-cultural
• "intercultural competence"
• linguistic justice
• poverty-informed; poverty; low-income; "ow-income household"
• transgender
• trauma-informed; trauma; "traumatic stress"

Advanced Searching

Combine search terms in a single search box or use the Advanced Search with multiple boxes, and enter a search term in each.  Notice the options to select AND to narrow a search and OR to broaden a search.
