In-Text Citations

In-text Citations are short references that point to the Works Cited page, a complete list of sources you found and used for your research project. The first time you reference a source, the In-Text Citation begins with whatever is listed first on the Works Cited page.

For in-text citations, MLA Style uses an author-page citation system:

  • in-text citations formed by the author's last name and the page number of the source
  • point to a Works Cited listt the end of the paper.
  • makes it easy to track down  exact sentences
  • cite direct quotes from the author
    • credits the author's words
  • cite passages that you've summarized or paraphrased
    • credits the author's thoughts and ideas

EXAMPLE WORKS CITED CITATION REFERRED TO IN-TEXT

Pierce,  Patricia. “Shakespeare and the Forgotten Heroes.” History Today, vol. 56, no. 7, July 2006, pp.3-4.

           EBSCOhost, search.ebscohost.com.ezproxy.westerntc.edu:2048/login.aspx?direct=true&AuthType=cookie,ip,cpid&

           custid=s6269778&db=aph&AN=21432939&site=ehost-live&scope=site.

The way you write a sentence determines how you will create your In-Text citation.

EXAMPLES IN-TEXT CITATIONS WITH AUTHOR

  1. Build the citation into the sentence
    • Patricia Pierce sheds new light on Shakespeare's first editors.
  2. Add the citation at the end of the sentence in parenthesis
    • John Heminges and Henry Condell compiled and published First Folio, thirty-six of Shakespeare's seven years after the author died. (Pierce)
  3. Add the page number at the end of a quote or paraphrased section
    • According to Patricia Pierce, there is little evidence to support the claim that the younger of the two, Henry Condell, may have played some of the female parts in Shakespeare's plays (3).
    • There is little evidence to support the claim that the younger of the two, Henry Condell, may have played some of the female parts in Shakespeare's plays (Pierce 3).

In the Works Cited entry below there is no author so the title of the article is the citation you use to cite in-text.

EXAMPLE CITATION

Again, the way you write a sentence determines how you will create your In-Text citation.
