Plan/Organize Slides

  • use your research notes to develop bullet points for your slides

 

  • keep your audience in mind as you plan
  • start laying out your presentation on a new PowerPoint - start with text first to make sure its laid out in logical order; add visuals later
    • identify your most important point and why it's important
    • introduction (1-2 slides)
      • what will your audience need to know to understand your presentation?
        • provide background information for context - introduce keywords, definitions, key ideas or concepts
    • body (4+ slides)
      • supports your main argument
      • include specific examples with visuals to clarify your message
    • summary slide 
      • summarize your main points using keywords from the introduction
      • use a strong simple statement to conclude

Powerpoint Do's

  • keep it simple 
  • choose a simple clean design with an easy to read font that conveys your messageHappy face icon
  • be sure to save as you go
  • use keywords
  • use a clean readable font - Arial, Helvetica, Calibri, etc
  • use a heading for each slide - font size 30-48 pts
    • use a high contrast color between font and background 
  • use bullet points or short sentences instead of paragraphs - font size 20-28 pts
    • 2-3 short sentences
    • no more than 6 bullet points
    • good spacing
  • use visual elements to illustrate your ideas: find copyright-free images:
  • proofread 

Powerpoint Don'ts

  • use ALL CAPSsad face icon
  • use text-only on slides
  • don't crowd elements on one slide
  • read from your slides
  • overuse transitions, animations, sounds
  • light colors (yellow) for fonts
