Lecture Method (Credo Reference)The ‘lecture method’ is typically characterized by linear delivery of information, synchronous, step-by-step learning, where the speed of delivery of ‘content’ is set at the instructor’s pace, where content is to a greater degree in the instructor’s control, and where content is produced and controlled by the lecturer. (O’Callaghan & Muurlink, 2020). The SAGE Encyclopedia of Higher Education.
Criticisms of the lecture method may well be better understood as criticisms of particular lecturers. The effectiveness of lectures seems to be closely related to individual differences in lecturers, and similarly, success with alternative methods such as the flipped classroom may be related to the aptitude of teachers in developing engaging materials and mastery in handling complex social interactions in the class.
