Introduction to Ethics (Course Guide)

Use this information to successfully complete your ethics-based arguments in this class.

Writing an Argument

Your arguments should always follow Mr. Weidenbach’s 6-part example:

1.   (X)  Stand (S)

  • Needs to be about ETHICS/PHILO - particularly the current theory - and be controversial

2-3. (X1+X2) Two Reasons (R1, R2)

  • Not opinions, not feelings, not beliefs - no "I feel…." no "I believe…. " - IS IT TRUE?
  • A good spot to use your evidence/proof/research

4.   (~X) Counterargument (CA)

  • opposing your claim/stand - IS IT TRUE?

5.   [~(~X)] Refutation (Ref.)

  • Specific evidence to disprove the counterargument - IS IT TRUE?

6.  (X) Restatement of Stand (RS)

  • Short summary of reasons for your Stand & your Stand itself

Works Cited - (WC) at least one credible non-textbook source in MLA 9 format

Things to think about when constructing your argument:

  • Make the application of the theory explicit

  • Each part needs to be more than one sentence

  • Only upload .docx files

  • Feel free to use Mr. Weidenbach's template to set up your argument.  Just enable editing, type in your information, and rename the document.

  • Feel free to use the Argument Organizer as a guide to HOW you should construct your ethics-based argument. Remember, your arguments do not have to be super wordy.  Be succinct!  Eventually you will use transitional words and phrases like suggested in this organizer.

Grading the Argument

How will my argument be scored?

Your argument will be scored according to the rubric:

  • Form: Have you included all of the 6 parts of the argument? (Stand, 2 Reasons, CA, Ref., RS)
  • Strength - are your reasons to support your argument strong & factual?
  • Application - are you using/understanding the theory appropriately?
  • Grammar - are you using complete sentences, correct punctuation, proper paragraph structure
  • Citation - does your citation follow MLA 9th ed. format?  Did you use hanging indentation?  Is your Works cited in alphabetical order?

ALWAYS look at the feedback on your assignments and in the announcements!  That feedback will give you tips for writing a better argument next time.
