Critiquing an Argument

How do I Critique an Argument in Discussion?

  • The subject line in the discussion/critique should be the name of the person whose argument you are critiquing.

  • Make sure your critique is at least 150 words and follows the rubric.

  • Remember that you are critiquing the argument, not the person.  You are not agreeing or disagreeing with the person’s argument.

  • Use the spell check (in the ABC box on Bb)

  • Avoid “I feel...” “I believe...” and  “I think...” statements.

Yes, you will be critiquing your classmates’ arguments using the same rubric (listed below) that Mr. Weidenbach uses to score your arguments.

Please critique your peers' arguments using this rubric:

  • Form: Have you included all of the 6 parts of the argument? (Stand, Reasons, CA, Ref., etc.)
  • Strength - are your reasons to support your argument strong & factual?
  • Application - are you using/understanding the theory appropriately?
  • Grammar - are you using complete sentences, correct punctuation, proper paragraph structure
  • Citation - does your citation follow MLA 9th ed. format?  Did you use hanging indentation?  Is your Works cited in alphabetical order?
