APA 7 Citation & Style

A resource guide to help you cite sources in APA 7.

Why Cite?

Writing for college assignments means you consult the work of others, then add your own take on that work.

Throughout your paper, project or presentation, as well as at the end, you will give credit to the sources you consulted. To NOT give credit to the authors of your sources is plagiarism.

You need to cite and give credit for ALL content that comes from other sourcesdirect quotes from the author and also passages that you've summarized or paraphrased. You credit not only the author's words, but their thoughts and ideas as well.

Citing your sources lends credibility to your writing and is one indicator of academic integrity.

The citation style (APA) defines HOW you give credit, but no matter what style you use, it's important that you do acknowledge where any thoughts, ideas, and words are not your own. APA style citations are generally used for writing about topics in education, psychology, business, engineering, the sciences and social sciences, but use the citation style your instructor requires, no matter what the field.

In the video below, Keri explains why citation is important.

Why cite sources?

  • It's the right thing to do!
  • Including information from other sources without giving credit is plagiarism (whether done intentionally or unintentionally)
  • It strengthens writing because use of additional sources adds authority and credibility
  • It increases the change of getting the point across
  • It demonstrates integrity and builds trust with the reader
  • It also helps the reader
