Save Money Using Library Resources (Free Textbooks!?)

This guide collects information about services the library offers that can save you money.

Read as many free books as you want!

Western's Library (and all libraries) is happy to be able to provide its community with free access to a wide variety of books and materials. Our collection can help you with your assignments, provide pleasure reading material, or help you learn a new skill or hobby.

Search for materials in Western's library using the library catalog:

And please ask us if you'd like to borrow a book that we don't have... We may be able to borrow it for you from another library.

Can I really borrow all those books for free!? What's the catch?

Yes, you can really borrow library materials for free. The only catch is that you need to return them before the due date so that others may borrow them.

Borrower guidelines:

  • Western library materials are available to borrow and use with your Western ID. You do not need to have your ID card to check out materials but you do need to know your ID number.

  • Students may check out up to 5 items at a time and return them within 3 weeks. (Exceptions: Course reserve textbooks and some special equipment can be used in the library for up to 3 hours). If you check out 5 books and then read them all that day, you can return them and check out 5 more books the next day.

  • The 3-week due date is recorded on a slip in the back of the book as a reminder to return it. It is your responsibility to remember the due date.

  • Materials may be renewed for an additional 3 weeks and we ask that you contact the library with exceptional circumstances that delay returns.

  • Return materials to the library in-person or in the library book drop outside the Student Success Center.

  • A reminder notice is sent before the due date and an additional notice sent after the due date. If the item is still not returned, patron borrowing privileges will be restricted or denied and patron will be billed for replacement cost. Privileges will be restored when an item is returned or paid for.
