Adding Citations
PARENTHETICAL CITATIONS
Parenthetical citations are placed at the end of the sentence containing the cited material:
1. Leave the end punctuation OFF the sentence
2. Add (Author’s last name/organization name, date/year only).
3. Period is placed AFTER the citation
4. Information in the parenthetical MUST match what is on the References page
For Example:
- APA style is a difficult citation format for first-time learners (Jones, 1998).
Placement of parenthetical citations:
- APA recommends placing the parenthetical citation after the FIRST sentence containing information from that source—do NOT wait until the end of the paragraph to include a citation unless ONLY the last sentence came from the source.
NARRATIVE CITATIONS
-
- Narrative citations weave the author’s last name or the organization name (must match the Reference page) INTO the text as part of the sentence
-
- Typically, the date is inserted (in parenthesis) immediately after the author/organization/title
-
- When including a narrative citation, you do NOT need to also include a parenthetical citation at the end of the sentence
For Example:
- Kohler (2016) noted the dangers of falsely balanced news coverage.
