Galloping Ghosts
The article focuses on wild horses which are found in the primeval forests of Poland known as Bialowieza, which is an area that is closed to hunters, loggers, and motorized vehicles, and is a refuge of unique flora and fauna. A history of the horses in the area, which have been seen since the fifth century B.C., and were known as tarpans, is presented. A discussion of a controversy which centers on the possibility that a Nazi scientist named Lutz Heck recreated an extinct version of the early tarpans is presented. |
