About this Guide

Welcome to the TEAS resource and review guide for Western Technical College students! This guide collects a variety of resources and strategies to help you prepare for your exam. Use the tabs on the left to navigate through the guide.

This prep guide was created collaboratively by a group of Western Technical College Learner Support and Transition instructors, Assessment Center staff, and Advisors.

What is the TEAS?

The TEAS V (or Test of Essential Academic Skills) exam measures basic essential skills in the academic content areas of reading, mathematics, science and English language usage. It is created and administered by Assessment Technology Institute (more commonly called ATI). This exam is required for admission to the Nursing – Associate Degree and Practical Nursing programs.

Where and when can I take the TEAS?

Students will create a profile at atitesting.com and self-register themselves online for the TEAS exam. You can find additional information about test dates and structure on Western's Assessment Center website under "Other Assessments."

TEAS Version 7 Test Structure and Subjects Assessed (for test dates after June 3, 2022)

The TEAS test includes questions from four different subject areas and each section is timed. ATI provides the following information about the contents of the exam:

There are 170 total items assessed on the ATI TEAS Version 7, which includes 150 scored items and 20 un-scored, pretest items.

The TEAS Version 7 contains multiple choice questions, as well as other question types such as multiple select, supply answer, hot spot items, and ordered response questions. For additional information about these question types, refer to the TEAS Version 7 FAQs section.

Are there review materials I can buy or borrow?

YES! There are a lot of different prep books and packages available to buy or borrow.

ATI also offers a variety of other packages for you to purchase in preparation for the exam. These have practice assessments and other review materials available for purchase with or without the study manual. (Note that the study manual itself is the most economical option.)

Who can help me prepare?

This guide offers a starting point to help you get familiar with the test structure, access practice tests, and guide your preparations.

But, there are also many Western staff people that can help you prepare:

In particular, your Advisor can be a great source of information and advice as you plan. Reach out to your Advisor if you're not sure when or how to register for the exam, if you've been unsuccessful in the past, or if you want to discuss your academic plan or future goals.
If you have questions about test dates or other testing logistics, connect with Western's Assessment Center.
Reach out to the Learning Commons team and ask about getting connected with support for test preparation. There is a whole team of instructors who can help you prepare! They can help you make a personalized study plan, build your test-taking or content skills, access review materials, and help you brush up on content that will be covered on the exam.
