Objective: Actively engage in reading and note-taking about best reading strategies

Directions: To build background knowledge around reading, click the links below to read about what defines “text” and what goes into reading efficiently.

Understanding the Reading Process

Click “An Overview of the Reading Process” below and complete Goals 1-3 (Read Actively; Use the reading process; and Preview, predict, question, and connect to prior knowledge)

Goal 1: Read actively.

  1. Read the introductory paragraph of "An Overview of the Reading Process" document above and then scroll down to table 1-1 "Active versus passive reading."
  2. Read the chart to learn the difference between active and passive readers. Complete the guided notes page below (fill in the blanks).

  1. Then read the following diagram on active reading strategies and note any additional tips to your chart.

Goal 2: Use the Reading Process

  1. In the Overview of the Reading Process" reading, scroll down and read Figure 1.1-The Reading Process.
  2. Fill in your concept map of strategies to engage in before, during, and after reading using the guided notes page below.

Goal 3: Pre-Reading Strategies

  1. In the Overview of the Reading Process" reading, scroll down to Pre-Reading Strategies.
  2. Ask yourself which of the strategies you are actively using when reading.

Assignment - Explore annotating with an on-line textbook

Assignment Instructions

  1. Create an On-line Account in Openstax https://openstax.org/ (Save Login credentials > Username/and password) 

  2. Go to Openstax and Login. Locate the “Subjects” tab at the top of the page and locate the “College Success” orange textbook

  3. View the book on-line exploring the Table of Contents. Note the text’s features and how it is organized/structured. 

  4. Next, locate the Search bar at the top of the page and type in the word “annotation”. Read while scrolling down to see the examples of annotated notes/texts. Read for more information.

  5. Next, practice using the on-line highlighting tool. Read and use the cursor to highlight an important concept. Pastel colored dots will appear in a box for you to choose from as a highlighter. Explore the tool. Any notes will be saved to print off later.  Note: Some on-line texts have study guides.

  6. Open the Annotating Reference Guide [pdf]

  7. Use the reference guide above and fill in the Annotating Reference Guide Guided Notes template with the corresponding information.
