Argument

The Method: Writing an Argument Paper

icon figure idea, thinking and writing

All written work in this class should be an argument - using a process of reasoning and rationality.   Here is the general form:

  • Stand (philosophy's equivalent of a thesis statement)
    • What are you arguing for?
      • start with a short introduction to introduce your topic, then arrive at your stand
  • Reasons
    • provide at least two reasons to support your stand?
      • remember to include topic sentences and transitions
  • Counter-argument
    • identify a possible objection to your stand - this is the philosophical part of your paper
  • Refutation
    •  describe how you might refute the counter-argument
  • Restatement of your argument
