General Studies Support

Introducing the General Studies Support Team!

Meet your General Studies Support Team!

We look forward to working with you!

Our job is to make sure you have the tools you need to be successful in all your courses. We can work with you on Blackboard navigation, time management, study strategies, organization, reading comprehension, writing skills, and any other area where you may need support. We can also help you with specific coursework in any subject that involves reading and writing. If you need assistance with any General Studies course that involves reading and/or writing, we are here to help!

We can also connect you to other Western resources including counseling, pc services, advising, access services, financial aid, and basic needs like food and housing.

We are happy to meet with you in-person or via ZOOM, or we can connect through e-mail. We are based out of the Writing Center in the Learning Commons (201 Student Success Center), but you may see us in your classes from time to time. We are excited to meet you--please drop by the Writing Center to say hello!

THE WRITING CENTER--MORE THAN JUST WRITING

Although the name implies "writing help"--in the Writing Center we refer to ourselves as the "catch-all center." If you need help with math, you go to the Math Center. If you need help with science, you go to the Science Center. If you need help with pretty much anything else, you come to the Writing Center!  Although we are not experts in everything, we have peer tutors who have taken most general studies courses, and our faculty are familiar with the curriculum and assignments in many classes.

  • English Comp
  • Speech/Oral Interpersonal Communication
  • Intro to Ethics
  • Intro to Psychology
  • Intro to Sociology
  • American Government

To be clear, we DO help with writing! Communications (reading, writing, and speech) at the college level can really be challenging. Thankfully, we have tutors and staff to support you with all aspects of written and verbal communication:

  • Breaking down the assignment to clarify the guidelines and expectations
  • Brainstorming topics for any writing project or speech
  • Grammar and punctuation assistance
  • Research, development, and organization
  • Citations
  • Resume and cover letter support
  • Job and scholarship applications

We offer assistance in general study/learning skills as well:

  • Reading comprehension
  • Note taking
  • Study skills
  • Test-taking strategies
  • Blackboard navigation
  • PowerPoint creation
  • Video recording
  • Document formatting
  • Textbook access and navigation
  • Organization
  • Time management
