Research information and resources.

Quick access

FYI: If you're accessing library resources (databases, Library Search account, etc.) from off campus, you will need to enter Western credentials. For library resources, those credentials are your Western email and email password.

Gathering information and gaining context

Let's get started with CultureGrams!

ProQuest CultureGrams is one of Western Library's many databases and a useful tool when researching countries and cultures from around the world. The database is separated into four modules World Edition, Kids Edition, States Edition, and Provinces Edition. CultureGrams World Edition will be the best module for this assignment, with information on more than 209 countries and territories. The searchable information includes basic facts about individual countries, as well as local perspectives, culture, history, customs, and lifestyles.

As you read, pay attention to the information that captures you. Take notes! These facts and terms will help guide further research into a specific culture.

Review content

As you read or skim the country overview, take notes or highlight key points, especially important words, phrases, and facts on a region or country. What areas look most interesting? Jot down details you'd like to explore more. This will inform the direction of your speech.

Use the Print Report or View Full Report on the right side of each page to view information in full and annotate with ease.

Identifying key information

If you find a source you plan to use, look for the citation generator to properly cite the source. You can also listen to versus read content. Mark pertinent passages, highlighting terms, topics, and ideas that will guide further research.
