* Learning Commons/Library Online Orientation Fall 2020

The Learning Commons and Library are here to help students and faculty online!

Meet Keri! She will help you improve your writing.

undefined  Keri Grokowsky - Communications Specialist, Writing Center

Writing! No matter what program you are enrolled in here at Western, you will be asked to write. In many cases you will also need to find research material (see the library's A-Z Databases list), and you will be asked to cite your sources in MLA, APA, or AMA formats.

The Writing Center can help with every kind of writing.

As a Western student, you may be asked to produce many types of writing such as:

  • discussion board posts
  • narrative essays
  • literary analysis papers
  • web page content
  • formal speeches
  • business proposals,
  • annotated bibliographies
  • extensive research projects
  • professional portfolios
  • resumes
  • cover letters

No matter what type of writing assignment you have, the Writing Center is here to help!

The Writing Center can help with every stage of the writing process.

We are here to support you through ANY part of the writing process. We can

  • talk through a writing assignment even if you haven't started yet
  • help you brainstorm ideas for topics
  • show you how to determine a specific focus and purpose for your paper
  • show you how to organize your ideas and draft your essay, and guide you from start to finish
  • help you craft your thesis statement, strengthen your topic sentences, or create smooth transitions
  • help you incorporate research into your writing
  • teach you how to paraphrase
  • help you cite your sources and create a Works Cited or Reference page
  • show you how to format your paper
  • help you fine-tune your project and clean up grammar and mechanics

We are happy to help you with all of these things!

Submit an assignment to the Online Writing Center and receive suggestions for improvement.

Use the Online Writing Center submission form to email a copy of your project along with assignment guidelines and specific requests you would like for feedback. One of our trained writing tutors will read your paper and insert comments, suggestions, and editing notes before emailing it back to you. Please allow 2-3 days for this type of feedback. The video below shows how to use the submission form.

Visit the Online Writing Center Zoom Room for in-the-moment help!

The Online Writing Center has a Zoom Room! Our on-going Zoom Room allows you to receive "in-person" help.

How it works:

  • We're available 8am-9pm Monday-Thursday, 8am-4pm on Friday, and 4pm-8pm on Sunday

  • Enter the Zoom Room by clicking on this link (

  • A trained peer tutor is waiting to help!

One note about the use of Zoom. We know that for many students, Zoom can be a bit scary because it is unfamiliar. But it is only scary and unfamiliar until you actually DO it, we promise! In our experience, while many students are reluctant to try it (OK, so we may have had to drag a few kicking and screaming that first time) after the initial experience, they keep coming back!

As one student said: "I didn't want to use Zoom at first. I didn't understand how it worked or what I was supposed to do. I'm glad I tried it that first time, because now I think Zoom is great! I use it all the time! Since we can't be on campus, it feels good to know that I'm able to use technology to get the help I need!"

Make an appointment to meet with Keri or a writing tutor.

Keri and all of the peer tutors are also available for appointment-based help.  Feel free to email Keri  to set up a phone call or Zoom appointment.

As you can see, the Writing Center is for much more than just writing. We’re happy to help you with whatever you need, in any way we can. Email me, Keri and let me know how I can help!
