Western’s Learning Commons is a college learning center rooted in social justice. Meeting the learning needs of our students is paramount to our mission: to provide access to academic resources and support, and to honor safety, transparency, peer support, collaboration, choice, and intersectional identities on campus and within the broader community.

The Learning Commons is home to Western's Library, Writing Center, Math Center, Tutor Support and the College Prep Center. This online orientation guide will answer the following questions:

Students:

  • I am not good at math, where do I go to get help so I can pass my classes?
  • Writing is hard for me, how can the Writiing Center help?
  • I'm having trouble in a couple of my classes, can I get a tutor online?
  • I want to get my GED, can the College Prep Center help me do that?
  • How do I find out if there are ebooks in the in library that I can use for an assignment?
  • My instructor says we have to use at least one scholarly source for our paper, how do I find one?
  • We're supposed to start our research with an encyclopedia, but the library is closed, what do we do?
  • Where can I find the data and statistics I need for a report?
  • It really helps me to actually see how something is supposed to be done, does the library have videos I can watch online?

Faculty:

  • I always bring my students to the Learning Commons for a tour. How can I introduce my students to the Learning Commons this year?
  • My students normally have to go to the library to find a book to read. I want to continue that assignment, what can I do instead?
  • I'd like to connect my student(s) with a tutor for my subject area. Who should I contact about that?
  • I'm trying to streamline and focus a research assignment for my students online, can the library help me with that?
